Paramount’s CEO David Ellison Is Out Of His Mind

Here in Hollywood, we always ask ourselves the same question each year: “Does life imitate art or does art imitate life?”

In what may be the single most bizarre business move in the history of the studio system in California, the following announcement was made over the past 24 hours:

“Warner Bros. Discovery’s blockbuster announcement Thursday that it would accept Paramount Skydance’s takeover bid shouldn’t be thought of simply as seeking to unify two major Hollywood players, two big streaming platforms and two leading TV news divisions under one roof.

This is not a good deal. It will cause havoc in Hollywood and may easily result in the loss of thousands of jobs. Unbelievable.

Paramount Pictures in the 1920s.

It is certainly that. The nearly $111 billion Paramount-Warner marriage would unite their studios — and their back catalogue of shows and movies. It would add such franchises as D.C. Comics, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones to Paramount’s Top Gun, Mission Impossible and Star Trek powerhouse. Paramount+ and HBO Max. CBS and CNN.”

It made sense to me to have Netflix purchase Warner Brothers because it would have easily been a collaboration of two corporations that could complement each other.

Paramount buying Warner Brothers makes no sense to me. Right now I smell fish and this is not the early 1970s when Gulf & Western purchased Paramount.

This is terrible because I was watching and listening to The Cultured Nerd Podcast with Michael and Taylor last night and I almost had a panic attack.

Why? Michael and Taylor are of the opinion that the only reason that David Ellison wants to purchase Warner Brothers is that after the two companies are combined, Paramount will end up being shredded with the potential of going bankrupt.

Check out the episode. I know you will get it.

Imagine buying a company to merge it with another company so you can put it out of business.

From 1930 until 1939, my family offices were on the Paramount lot. If my family including my cousins knew what was about to happen to Paramount, they would most likely picket like everyone else. The DNA of Warner Brothers and Paramount together would be a nightmare. This is not a good strategy.

While I realize that Ellison would love to have Paramount’s content, once the deal is signed, just watch as Paramount fades to black.

Paramount has been in this position before but this is the wrong combination of players. Their history and DNA don’t match.

When Gulf and Western bought Paramount back in the day, it made sense because it was a new business for them and they wanted to diversify.

I’ll have a lot more to write about this tomorrow, and in the days and weeks ahead.
