It is often said in Hollywood that you actually make three movies.
The first movie is what is written on the page, the script.
The second movie that you make is what you film.
The third movie you make is what you edit.
Billy Wilder, one of my favorite directors liked to “edit in the camera.”
Want an example?
This year is the 75th Anniversary of a classic movie, Sunset Blvd.
Billy Wilder was so frugal and thoughtful and did so much “pre-editing,” that after principal photography, a rough edit of the film was able to be completed in only 4 days.
