Apple’s Big Event

A Commentary On Changing Technology by Mitch Santell

Apple Always Makes You Upgrade Even When You Don’t Want Too.

The New World Order is already here, and I always know this whenever Apple, Inc. is having one of their “big meetings.”

Today it was a trip as I literally had to spend the entire day resetting my Administration Password on my MacBook Air. My laptop is running macOS High Sierra while my iMac is using the latest version of Mojave.

Of course, Apple will always tell you these systems are compatible with each other, but at the end of the day, they are not.

apple wi fi unit
Apple’s Amazing WiFi Unit Now Discontinued.

Next? The Wifi wouldn’t work right so I had to go into my closet and pull out my old Apple WiFi Unit from 2013.

I’ve placed a picture of it here so if you haven’t seen it, you can check it out.

Next? Thank goodness I am a patient man because then I had to check the MacBook Air’s Wi-fi (via my iPhone) to make sure that the Laptop’s Wi-fi would still work. It checked out perfectly and yet even my “Cox Wireless Modem” still could not recognize my MacBook Air without the old router plugged in and streaming.

The world we live in is 2 stage authentication. Apple makes this process easy, and it still feels like I am making a doctors appointment as each device checks every other device.

This is my “best guess,” as to what I think happens.

Ready?

So you have millions and millions of users who use various systems on their desktop or their laptop and then there is the iPhone which as my dear friend Tom always says “is like having a MacBookPro in your pocket.

After that? There is always the issue of “Security Updates,” and of course, we never know when Apple will notify us about that except it always seems to be before their Big Event.

Yes, I use an iPhone 7plus and have not had one reason to upgrade it.

The best way that I have found to simplify the Apple experience is to text message off my Mac.

What was the best part of today?

After all this craziness starting at about 10 AM today, I finally had everything updated and working and back to “normal.” Of course, what is normal right?

My Apple Wireless Router is now back in my closest, the MacBook Air is now working correctly, and of course, since I also have an iCloud account, I didn’t lose any of my family photos or videos or pictures.

Parting shot: Who can still tell the truth?

Answer: Comedians.

Yes, this may look like a joke when you hear it and laugh, but there is a lot of truth here from Bill Burr.

Obama Gave Away The Internet

Commentary on Obama’s Deception by Mitch Santell

obama-talk-alone (1)

The one thing I look back on in regards to what little President Obama did during his eight years in office was giving away the internet. How stupid is that? Just another reason why Americans voted for President Donald J. Trump in the last election.

In 1992, when Bill Clinton was running for president, if you asked the average American, “What is the Internet? What is the World Wide Web? And, what is Email?” most Americans would not have known.

It is hard to believe in less than a quarter century, the internet has transformed the world. It has created wealth for many. It has changed the way America does business. It has given birth to political movement and killed political careers. The Internet is without a doubt the greatest tool for advancing freedom since the invention of the printing press.

It is no great shock that President Obama does not like American control of the internet. The internet was an American invention and America shared it with the world. American values of freedom and liberty created the Internet and allowed it to flourish. Now, in one of his last acts, Obama wants to destroy the Internet.

No, this is not one of those crazy internet conspiracy theories.

Despite the explicit wishes of Congress, Mr. Obama wants to allow an international body to take control of the Internet.

Dystopian Battle Between Men & Women

Commentary by Mitch Santell

After Hollywood Kaitlyn Bristowe Jason-Tartick

The false narrative of romance on social media is a joke to me. That’s right, it is an absolute fake narrative.

Over the past few years, I have connected with couples who initially met on FaceBook or Twitter or Instagram.

What are the chances that these relationships will work out? Minimal chance based on what I have observed.

If you have met someone this way be careful that the person is simply not presenting or pitching a lifestyle that is not their own.

social media distraction

Social media is what I’d call a romance contraceptive. It prevents romance from happening every single day.

Every day when I’m out and about, I’ll see people in elevators, I’ll see people in grocery stores, coffee shops, and at restaurants. And they’re all checking Facebook! Or they’re tweeting something to their 3.7 followers. We’ve become a society of people who are obsessed with what’s happening in the imaginary world.

Facebook is an imaginary world.

Checking in on what your friends are doing at noon when you can be flirting with a handsome stranger or the cute girl next to you in line at Starbucks is a complete social block.

Just the other day, I was in a supermarket in Los Angeles and I saw this guy checking out this girl. He was standing next to her in line at the juice bar. He kept looking at her, and she kept looking down … at the Facebook app on her iPhone.

Now, I know some of you right now are thinking, maybe she wasn’t interested. That wasn’t the issue. Because what I’m about to share with you is something most of you have probably done.

He gave up and disappeared. But I was crazy curious so I stood next to her in line and got real close and peeked at what she was typing into her phone.

Her status update: When am I going to meet a nice guy? It seems like all the good men are taken.

Think about what just happened.

She complained about not finding good men, but here was an interested man, standing next to her. Now, granted, nobody knows if the romance would have worked, but think about this: for every moment that you’re checking your Twitter feed, or your so-called friends’ updates on Facebook, you’re missing another opportunity to connect with somebody in real life … which could be another opportunity to fall in love.

Wake up, and walk away from the social media every once in a while. Drop the smartphone. It’s not making you smart; it’s actually making you pretty dumb. Save the social media checking for when you’re home. When you’re out and about, drop it, and be uncomfortable again. Sit in a restaurant, and look around, but don’t read Facebook: be present, and smile at the people that are around you. We don’t need to be constantly doing things on our phones.

So, my advice to all of you who would like to find romance this holiday season: Leave the phone at home. Sit with the discomfort of being without your contraceptive coping aid — the smartphone — and start looking at all the available people that have been there the whole time wanting to meet you. Then, maybe you will return home and type a status update like this:

You wouldn’t believe what happened today in Starbucks, I met the most amazing person; I can’t wait to see him tonight.

Apple’s In Trouble and Here Is Why

Casual Commentary and Observations by Mitch Santell

613-9967-02

From what I have observed over the past 100 days at Apple makes me scratch my head. I’ve been a hardcore Apple user since 1984 spending thousands and thousands of dollars buying Apple products early in their life cycle.

My MacBook Air was purchased in 2014 and works great. I’ve had to recently replace the electric cord (Replacement Cost 55. dollars) and a brand new battery with installation (Cost 165.00 dollars).

magsafe macbook air
The Magsafe Cord Was Introduced in 2006 and Keeps Your Laptop Safe from Being Knocked Off Your Desk.

So as hot and sexy as the revised MacBook Air is for 2019, I think I’ll just stick with my current MacBook Air for another year because if it ain’t broke, don’t worry about it.

The reason that Apple is in trouble is that I predict that thousands of faithful Apple users are going to do what I just did. What was that? Simply fix or make adjustments to your current Mac and keeping your money in your pocket. The same is true of the iPhone. If you have an iPhone 7 or iPhone 8 that works, why trade up?

With regard to keeping products running on time, under Tim Cook, the MacBook Air (one of its most popular machines) was not updated in over 3 years, the Mac mini was not updated in over 4 years, and at over 5 years with still no update to the Mac Pro. The MacBook and iMac haven’t been updated in more than 1.5 years. The iPad mini hasn’t been updated in almost 2 years.

HomePods, beyond being 3 years late relative to Amazon, missed an important holiday season ceding more ground to other smart speakers. AirPods availability came late and is still constrained. AirPower was announced in 2017 and is still vapor.

Apple has basically abandoned and/or lobotomized much of its software in not providing meaningful feature upgrades in years; iTunes is a joke, iWork has had minimal updates (e.g., still cannot do basic word processing functions like table of authorities, line numbering, custom paragraph numbers, etc.), Aperture is dead, Back-to-Mac is dead, Airport Utility was lobotomized, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Apple’s Little Secret

Commentary On Little Irritations by Mitch Santell

apple-macintosh-1984-history
Nope, It is Not 1984.

Like so many of us who are die hard Apple fans, we sometimes think that Apple in 2018 is Apple of 2008. Well, it is not. The most recent little secret that I discovered when I wanted to treat my wife to one of her favorite films from when she was a kid.

We simply purchased Lost Horizon at the iTunes store. We immediately started streaming the movie and it looked fine.

This morning I decided that I would download the movie to my Mac Mini so that we would not have to wait for Apple to “authorize” our purchase so we could stream it.

Guess what? I could download the film but because I use a less expensive Dell Monitor, I couldn’t play the film after I downloaded it.  The film will still stream but not download.

My response to all this? It makes me not want to purchase movies any more through Apple, Inc.

Sorry Steve Jobs, I think I’ll be going elsewhere to buy my films bro.

Apple's secret
Apple’s Little Secret Is That You Can’t Download Movies To a Mac That Has A Cheap Screen.

The biggest innovations from Apple in 2019 likely won’t be its devices. Instead, it’ll be the services that run on them.

iPhone sales just aren’t soaring like they used to, and it’s getting harder to make smartphones flashier each year. Apple’s ability to woo users increasingly may come from the software and services — like Apple Music and the upcoming Apple video service — we use on those devices.

That’s partly why Apple will no longer break out iPhone unit sales. Tim Cook wants everyone to think about Apple differently, as hard as that may be.

“Given the momentum that we’re seeing across the board, we feel great about our current services,” Cook said during the company’s earnings call in July. “But obviously we’re also thrilled about our pipeline that have some new services in it as well.”

Apple in the coming years may look very different from the company in the past decade, when it got about two-thirds of its revenue from its smartphone lineup.

Apple & Spotify, What are you doing?

Reflections On Streaming Rip-Offs by Mitch Santell

Every month I put out 14.99 and pay it directly to Apple, Inc. for a family streaming plan.

Apple Family Membership
This is what I pay for a family plan. Is it a rip off?
spotify rip off
Spotify Rips You Off Just Like Apple, Inc.

The reality is only some of your money is paid to the artists you listen to.

The rest of your money (and it’s probably most of your money) goes somewhere else. That “somewhere else” is decided by a small group of subscribers who have gained control over your money thanks to a mathematical flaw in how artist royalties are calculated. This flaw cheats real artists with real fans, rewards fake artists with no fans, and perhaps worst of all communicates to most streaming music subscribers a simple, awful, message: Your choices don’t count, and you don’t matter.

Apple, Now 1 Trillion Dollar Company!

Technical and Social Musings about Apple Written by Mitch Santell

Featured Image -- 511
What will Apple, Inc. do with your data in the cloud?

I’m not embarrassed to admit it. When the iPhone came out in 2007, I saw the potential that the device had to mess people up. Usually, I say that we are analog people in a digital world but based on current observations I think so many of our young people have been cloned off and are too distracted to think.

Apple, Inc. is at the crossroads of how it will forward as a company because when a company as large as Apple, Inc. allows all of it’s iCloud Chinese customers to have their data moved to Government servers, you are looking at a privacy nightmare.

Do you have to ask yourself, “When will this happen in America? I don’t know because I have followed Apple’s privacy policies closely and my data always felt safer with Apple than with their competitors. If you are a regular follower of my blog you know that I have written about Apple before.

Apple Transfers Chinese Users’ iCloud Data to State-Controlled Data Centers

There’s terrible news for Apple users in China. Apple’s Chinese data center partner has transferred iCloud data, belonging to 130 million China-based users, to a cloud storage service managed by a state-owned mobile telecom provider—raising concerns about privacy.

Back in February this year, Apple moved the encryption keys and data of its Chinese iCloud users from its US servers to local servers on Chinese soil to comply with the new regulation of the Chinese government, despite concerns from human rights activists.

For this Apple controversially signed a deal with Guizhou-Cloud Big Data (GCBD), a Chinese company who gained operation control over Apple’s iCloud business in China earlier this year.

Now, that sensitive data, which includes users’ emails, text messages, pictures, and the encryption keys that protect it, has been passed on to Tianyi cloud storage service, a business venture managed by government-owned mobile operator China Telecom.
