Apple’s Bigger Problem

Commentary About The Cult Known as Apple by Mitch Santell

Original iMac
iMac G3 (The Original).

The most common question that I get as a radio producer is: What gear do you use?

Answer: Apple is my #1 go to product for producing media.

The part I don’t say: I use a 2014 MacBook Air and a 2013 iMac because I know they still work.

My iMac needed a new SSD hard drive, which was about 330.00 dollars, and my MacBook Air needed a new battery.

The reason I have stayed with Apple is that I love the Mac software and how it integrates with my iPhone 7.

A special Hat Tip to Executive Producer Ricky Ray who found the following:

Jony Ive Is Making People Uneasy

Apple pessimism is on the rise. New Apple products are being questioned like never before. Even some of Apple’s most loyal customers are beginning to wonder about Apple’s direction. While many are directing criticism towards Tim Cook, nearly all of the criticism pointed towards Apple can in one way or another be traced back to a different person: Jony Ive.

Apple Power Brokers

The two most powerful people at Apple are Tim Cook and Jony Ive. While Cook is tasked with making sure the Apple machine is being run by the best team possible, Jony’s role is much more abstract. Cook aims to foster collaboration at the top of Apple’s functional organizational structure. If something goes wrong, much of the criticism is quickly pointed at either Cook or one of his top lieutenants. (Phil Schiller and Eddy Cue seem to take the brunt of the criticism.) Cook has also taken on the more traditional CEO role of representing Apple in the outside world

However, the one area Cook does not have complete control over is product strategy. That distinction belongs to Jony. It may seem hyperbolic to consider Jony the most powerful person at Apple. He no longer spends much time managing anyone on a day-to-day basis. He doesn’t speak on Apple’s earnings conference calls. Wall Street knows very little about him, and neither does Silicon Valley. In fact, following his recent promotion to Chief Design Officer, Jony doesn’t even spend as much time at Apple HQ these days. Yet Jony has such a significant influence over Apple’s product strategy, it is safe to say we are firmly within the Jony Ive era at Apple.

Design Led

Jony holds an incredible amount of power because Apple is a design-led company. Apple’s functional organizational structure and culture are set up in order to give the Industrial Design (ID) group absolute power. ID holds more power at Apple than any other group.

This structure was put in place more than 15 years ago with the iMac being the first product to take advantage of this new culture. Up to the late 1990s, engineers held the most power at Apple. Designers were merely tasked with skinning Apple products created by engineers. With the iMac, ID was afforded the freedom to move ideas from conception to reality without compromise. While Steve Jobs was the primary architect of this new power structure, the relationship he had with Jony undoubtedly played a role.

When The Grid Goes Down, We All Go Down

Something To Think About by Mitch Santell

Now you know why Americans no longer trust the Main Stream Media Here. Read this and be aware, please.

According to a study by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the entire U.S. power grid could be shut down in a matter of minutes through a small-scale attack on nine of the country’s 55,000 electric-transmission substations.

The danger was exposed late last year when an unknown group of people was able to successfully penetrate a San Jose, California power substation, strategically cutting fiber cables and then firing over 100 rounds of ammunition into ten transformers. The attack highlighted how even a low-tech, small-scale attack could potentially takedown the entire grid.

According to a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission study, a relatively small coordinated attack in each of the nation’s three separate electric systems could cause the entire power grid to collapse. If nine out of the country’s 55,000 electric-transmission substations were taken out – in an attack similar to the San Jose attack – the U.S. could suffer a catastrophic coast-to-coast failure of its power grid.

While the federal government is keeping quiet on how real the danger is, we’ve covered numerous examples of how our nation’s public utilities have been breached in the past.

A memo prepared at FERC in late June for Former FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff,  summed up the danger. “Destroy nine interconnection substations and a transformer manufacturer and the entire United States grid would be down for at least 18 months, probably longer.” Part of the problem comes from the fact that very few of these transformers are still manufactured in the United States, with most of them now coming in from overseas.

A 2012 report by the National Research Council, written for the Department of Homeland Security, said that the “greatest vulnerability in the event of a terrorist physical attack on the power system will likely be securing needed replacements of high-voltage transformers.” It said restoring power “could take weeks, months, or even longer.”

Obama Gave Away The Internet

Commentary on Obama’s Deception by Mitch Santell

obama-talk-alone (1)

The one thing I look back on in regards to what little President Obama did during his eight years in office was giving away the internet. How stupid is that? Just another reason why Americans voted for President Donald J. Trump in the last election.

In 1992, when Bill Clinton was running for president, if you asked the average American, “What is the Internet? What is the World Wide Web? And, what is Email?” most Americans would not have known.

It is hard to believe in less than a quarter century, the internet has transformed the world. It has created wealth for many. It has changed the way America does business. It has given birth to political movement and killed political careers. The Internet is without a doubt the greatest tool for advancing freedom since the invention of the printing press.

It is no great shock that President Obama does not like American control of the internet. The internet was an American invention and America shared it with the world. American values of freedom and liberty created the Internet and allowed it to flourish. Now, in one of his last acts, Obama wants to destroy the Internet.

No, this is not one of those crazy internet conspiracy theories.

Despite the explicit wishes of Congress, Mr. Obama wants to allow an international body to take control of the Internet.

Is Your Life Now The Truman Show?

Reflections On Humanity In An In-Humane Time by Mitch Santell

Truman show?

Watching the sociological cloning off of humanity is a trip to experience. For most of us who are awake and working to fine tune our “truther perceptions,” we can openly see, hear and feel the predictive programming all around us.

If this is what happens to aunts walking around a smartphone when it rings, can you imagine what your smartphone is doing to you?

There are grave concerns about 5G and the microwaves that will be bombarding your brain.

American Universities Are Becoming RF Hell Holes

Rich Farver was a 29-year-old San Diego State University (SDSU) political science teaching assistant where he had already earned his masters degree, died of glioblastoma multiforme(GBM) brain cancer on October 11, 2008. Rich’s mother, Virginia, began a quest to find out why. Virginia discovered that several students and staff were dying on the campus of San Diego State University of various cancers. Virginia was subsequently told that Rich’s cell phone was the culprit. Shortly after that, she found an article entitled  “Brain Cancer Cluster on the San Diego State University Campus.” The light came on and Virginia met off-campus with some professors mentioned in the article. The professors told her that they had asked for a toxicology study, as there is a huge cell tower right next to the building where Farver lived and ultimately died.

Apple’s In Trouble and Here Is Why

Casual Commentary and Observations by Mitch Santell

613-9967-02

From what I have observed over the past 100 days at Apple makes me scratch my head. I’ve been a hardcore Apple user since 1984 spending thousands and thousands of dollars buying Apple products early in their life cycle.

My MacBook Air was purchased in 2014 and works great. I’ve had to recently replace the electric cord (Replacement Cost 55. dollars) and a brand new battery with installation (Cost 165.00 dollars).

magsafe macbook air
The Magsafe Cord Was Introduced in 2006 and Keeps Your Laptop Safe from Being Knocked Off Your Desk.

So as hot and sexy as the revised MacBook Air is for 2019, I think I’ll just stick with my current MacBook Air for another year because if it ain’t broke, don’t worry about it.

The reason that Apple is in trouble is that I predict that thousands of faithful Apple users are going to do what I just did. What was that? Simply fix or make adjustments to your current Mac and keeping your money in your pocket. The same is true of the iPhone. If you have an iPhone 7 or iPhone 8 that works, why trade up?

With regard to keeping products running on time, under Tim Cook, the MacBook Air (one of its most popular machines) was not updated in over 3 years, the Mac mini was not updated in over 4 years, and at over 5 years with still no update to the Mac Pro. The MacBook and iMac haven’t been updated in more than 1.5 years. The iPad mini hasn’t been updated in almost 2 years.

HomePods, beyond being 3 years late relative to Amazon, missed an important holiday season ceding more ground to other smart speakers. AirPods availability came late and is still constrained. AirPower was announced in 2017 and is still vapor.

Apple has basically abandoned and/or lobotomized much of its software in not providing meaningful feature upgrades in years; iTunes is a joke, iWork has had minimal updates (e.g., still cannot do basic word processing functions like table of authorities, line numbering, custom paragraph numbers, etc.), Aperture is dead, Back-to-Mac is dead, Airport Utility was lobotomized, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

California May End Free Speech by 2019

Reflections on Dystopian California by Mitch Santell

The State of California is a bit out of control as it relates to ending freedom of speech. You are going to watch news agencies, independent bloggers and social influencers placing their server outside of California and outside of the USA.

The California Senate and State Assembly recently passed S.B. 1424, the “Internet: social media: advisory group” act. Think of the entire State of California acting as a “safe space” for free speech. My prediction? S.B. 1424 once signed is going to trigger all kinds of lawsuits as people have “their feelings hurt.” My insight? Start looking now for a Non-California based platform.

weebly-logo
Weebly Is One Of The Best Template Based Platforms On The Market in 2018.

What companies are going to be affected most? Weebly will be touched and manipulated by the bill; I love the Weebly platform, their home office is in San Francisco.

The issue for companies like Weebly is how they will enforce the new rules of S.B. 1424?

California is one step away from going down the unconstitutional road of government-mandated censorship of Internet speech. The California Senate and State Assembly recently passed S.B. 1424, the “Internet: social media: advisory group” act. This fake news advisory act is now on the desk of Governor Jerry Brown for his signature.

According to Section 3085 of the legislation:

The Attorney General shall, subject to the limitations of subdivision (d), establish an advisory group consisting of at least one member of the Department of Justice, Internet-based social media providers, civil liberties advocates, and First Amendment scholars, to do both of the following:

(a) Study the problem of the spread of false information through Internet-based social media platforms.

(b) Draft a model strategic plan for Internet-based social media platforms to use to mitigate the spread of false information through their platforms.

It’s hard to imagine those voting for the bill were motivated by good intentions. In any case, good intentions are not enough. Is it hard to imagine the results of the law will be censorship of views that politicians disagree with and views critical of politicians?

Most likely, Californians are not concerned about “fact-checking” content like “a mile is 5290 feet” or an appeal to form a flat Earth Facebook group; such content poses no threat to entrenched interests. Instead, “fact-checking” will be deployed against those who express doubt, for example, about climate change, vaccine safety, or “educating” children about gender dysphoria.

In a world where most scientific studies can’t be replicated, a consensus should not be confused with an immutable fact.

If you doubt that censorship is the aim of the bill, consider the even more draconian measures that an earlier version of the bill required. Social media sites would have needed to develop “a plan to mitigate the spread of false information through news stories, the utilization of fact-checkers to verify news stories, providing outreach to social media users, and placing a warning on a news story containing false information.”

The First Amendment makes no provisions for government judging the validity of speech either directly or through mandated “fact-checking.” In legitimate cases of defamation, legal remedies are available, but the bar for a successful lawsuit is high.

Why Authoritarians Always Suppress Speech

In his new discussion paper, “The Mirage of Democratic Socialism,” economist Kristian Niemietz of the Institute of Economic Affairs counts “more than two dozen attempts (not counting the very short-lived ones) to build a socialist society.”

“They all,” Niemietz writes, “led to varying degrees of economic failure.” With that economic failure always came “varying degrees of repression and political authoritarianism,” as well as severe limitations on “freedom of choice and personal autonomy in the economic sphere.”

Authoritarians, including so-called “democratic socialists,” must always suppress speech. Why? Human beings have boundless preferences and competing goals. These preferences and goals are sorted out by either socialist planners or impersonal market processes.

There are others who see this bill as illegal:

Ajit_V._Pai_
Ajit V. Pai

FCC head honcho, Ajit Pai, didn’t mince words in comments regarding California’s recent passing of a tough net neutrality bill. In his keynote speech for neoconservative policy organization Maine Heritage Policy Center, Pai called California’s SB 822 “illegal” and said it “poses a risk to the rest of the country.”

Pai also hinted that he’d be coming for California should SB 822, seen as the toughest net neutrality law in the nation, receive the governor’s signature, as it’s expected to in the next two weeks.

Federal only supersedes state law on specific issues which the US Constitution delegates to the federal government. That’s the Tenth Amendment. In this instance, the FCC can’t just roll in and pull rank on California, no matter what Pai promises his right-wing, internet-carpetbagging cronies.

Apple Does Privacy Right!

Technology Obsession Commentary by Mitch Santell

Apple-iPhone-XR-colors
Apple iPhone Xr Will Be A Hot Seller in 2018/2019

Every year Apple parades it’s the newest version of the iPhone. After the official pitch and presentation by Apple, I notice that there are three kinds of articles that come out regarding the latest technology upgrades.

The first kind of article will explain how Apple has lost its edge and they used to be better when Steve Jobs was alive.

The second kind of article will explain how these are the best Apple products ever.

The third kind of article will tell you the reason to switch to Windows or Samsung or some other type of system.

The one thing that most people don’t get is this: Apple does not use their customer data for marketing purposes. Tim Cook says that “privacy is a right,” provided to its customers. As a customer, this gives me so much comfort that while I have seriously looked at products like the Samsung Note 9 and the new Google Pixel Phone 3 coming out, it is what Apple does best! Apple protects customer data.

Protecting customer data is the number 1 reason I keep going back to Apple, Inc.

Parting shot: Ever notice how most Apple customers will pick a particular product and say that “this is the best product that Apple ever made.” Right now I have an Apple iPhone 7plus that works perfectly, and I anticipate that I’ll keep it for at least one more year.

The big seller? I think that Apple’s new iPhone Xr with a starting price of 749.00 dollars USD. This phone is remarkable for what it does, and the phone is at the right price point.

Apple’s privacy stance is a huge ‘competitive advantage’ over Facebook and Google (AAPL)

Apple’s business model focuses primarily on making money through its hardware, instead of on internet and software, which creates a heavy reliance on advertising for revenue. That makes it largely insulate the company from the European Union’s strict privacy protection laws.

“Although Apple sometimes speaks of privacy on moral grounds—Tim Cook says ‘privacy is a fundamental human right’—its business model makes emphasizing privacy easier than for Google or Facebook,” Steven Milunovich, a UBS analyst, wrote in a note to clients.

Google and Facebook, on the other hand, will likely feel more pain because of their heavy reliance on advertising to drive revenues, Milunovich says. The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which goes into effect on May 25, will restrict the kinds of data that companies can collect and requires consumers to opt-in to marketing campaigns, as well as give users more of a choice in what they would like to disclose. A Deutsche Bank analyst said the law could even wipe out as much as $2 billion from Google’s revenues, for instance.

By contrast, Apple’s privacy policy does not allow its users’ data to be shared for marketing purposes, and it could turn out to be the company’s biggest “competitive advantage,” Milunovich says.

The Hardest and Easiest Part of Success

Simple Inspiration by Mitch Santell

The hardest part of success is following your own heart while others think that you are nuts.

The easiest part of success is to follow up and follow through. You do not have to be the brightest, fastest, keenest person in the room, you simply have to have the passion and tenacity to keep going when it feels like the world is against you.

You know you can do it!
