Commentary and Observations by Mitch Santell and Ricky Ray
The past ten days here in America have felt like a weird reality show. Over this time I’ve had numerous dialogue’s with my Executive Producer RR, so I am going to try to sequence what is happening as best I can.
First, we have been down this road before.
In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt declared a limited national emergency. The country faced very real dangers, with Nazi armies having taken control of Western Europe. If Britain fell, Adolf Hitler posed an existential threat to the United States and democratic governments around the world. With Atlantic trade routes imperiled by German submarines, Roosevelt signed an executive agreement without congressional sanction that handed over 50 American destroyers to Britain’s Royal Navy to protect shipping lanes. Six months before Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt declared an unlimited national emergency and ordered the U.S. Navy to attack on sight any German subs that approached convoys traversing the ocean. These actions kept Britain in the war.

President Roosevelt Declares An Unlimited National Emergency like no other during his Fireside Chat #17 presented on May 27, 1941.

This document was signed six months before Pearl Harbor.
The United States’ formal entry into the Second World War unshackled Roosevelt. Although his role as commander in chief provided him with tremendous authority, he far surpassed the constitutional powers envisioned.
While President Roosevelt delegated many war-fighting decisions to senior military leaders, he essentially took over the national economy, fundamentally reorganizing and controlling the industrial sector, restricting transportation, guiding collective bargaining and regulating communications.
Abraham Lincoln did it.
The Civil War, the Second World War, and the Cuban missile crisis were all actual national emergencies, where the very existence of the country was at risk.
