Commentary About How We All Self-Medicate by Mitch Santell
From the age of 19 forward coffee became my preferred beverage. Over the years not only have I been passionate about coffee, but I also love to grind my own beans and brew my coffee by a method known as French Press.
The reason I start here with coffee is that I used to have so many people ask me, “Why don’t you drink herbal tea?” Usually, I would just respond by stating that “Coffee was my drug of choice.”
During my teens, I was seriously afraid of drugs, especially pills. What did I have so much fear? The answer was and is that I can’t swallow pills and even if I have to take an antibiotic (which thank God is not too often), I have to chew the pill. In my teenage years’ quaaludes and other tablets were offered to me but I turned them down.
One time I went to a party, and there were a pile hash and all kinds of drugs on the table, and literally two minutes later I exited the party.
The was something very profound that the original Paul McCartney (RIP) talked about before his replacement right before Sgt. Pepper in 1966 regarding drugs. Do you remember what it was? Here it is, I am paraphrasing as best I can. It had something to do with the fact that once you take certain drugs, they change you and you can’t go back to who you were, and you may not like who you become after the drug.
Yes, Coffee is still my drug of choice. You know what your drug of choice is but guess what? It’s not my drug!
