L.A. California’s Big Trend: Visiting Bong Shops and Cannabis Growers

Commentary by Mitch Santell

The ability to look back at your history puts you in a unique place called perspective. For anyone who is a baby boomer (my generation) or others afterward, it still is a fantastic shift how common Cannabis is in California. What you are about to read is really happening, I didn’t make this up!

Happy Wednesday to all my readers and followers.

The Los Angeles Times

In Napa and Sonoma, tour bus operators ferry wine lovers between tasting rooms and vineyards. In Hollywood and environs, they shepherd the starstruck past the homes of the rich and famous.

Now they’re giving customers a mind-expanding look at one of Los Angeles’ burgeoning industries: pot.

Since recreational use of marijuana became legal a year ago, a pot tourism business has emerged, taking visitors behind the scenes of California’s estimated $7 billion cannabis industry.

“Every other day it seems another tour company is popping up,” said Lauren Jones, who owns Weedology, a cannabis tour company based in Los Angeles. “It’s like a gold rush.”

Each pot tour company has its own points of interest, generally including a grow facility, a bong maker or accessory retailers and a marijuana dispensary, where visitors can get joint-rolling lessons. Expect product discounts, but not freebies. And some tours allow smoking on board, for those so inclined.

Tours are priced between $40 and $200 a person, depending on the length of the trip, the stops and other features.

Starting this month, L.A.-based Green Tours is adding an itinerary that includes a pot-smoking session with weed-loving ‘70s movie legend, Tommy Chong. That tour is priced at $149 a person, owner Gene Grozovskiy said.

Grozovskiy’s father thought his son was nuts when he announced plans to quit his full-time job as a patient placement coordinator at a large Los Angeles hospital to start a marijuana tour company.

“At first pops was like, ‘You want to do what kind of tours?”’ Grozovskiy, 35, recalled. “He thought I was just being silly.”

Other tour company owners also come with respectable pedigrees and want to hop on what they see as a profitable future in recreational cannabis.

Jones, who works as a resources specialist at Los Angeles Unified School District, launched Weedology tours in February as a part-time gig that she hopes can eventually grow to a full-time job.

Ed Legarda is a tech-industry consultant who started Green Line Trips in January. It primarily offers tours on the weekends but he also hopes it will expand to daily operation.

Cannabis tourism also has caught on in other places where weed is legal, such as Colorado and Nevada. It’s part of a myriad ancillary businesses that make up the marijuana industry, including compliance consultants, cannabis testing labs, ultraviolet lighting installers, security and transportation services.

The National Cannabis Industry Assn., a trade group based in Colorado, has nearly 2,000 business as members, with about 60 percent to 70 percent of those companies providing services that don’t involve selling marijuana, spokesman Morgan Fox said.

“We have seen an explosion of businesses related to cannabis,” he said.

Nationwide, the sale of cannabis directly or indirectly employed an estimated 170,000 full-time workers in 2017, according to a study by the Arcview Group, an Oakland-based firm for investors in the marijuana industry. That number is expected to grow to more than 467,000 full-time workers in 2022, the firm estimates.

Vinyl Records Growing In Sales Again

Commentary On The Legacy of Vinyl by Mitch Santell

more spinning vinyl wb

There is nothing that is more fun than playing a vinyl album. Everything from the paper the album cover is printed on, to the liner notes to the smell of the Vinyl itself, there is nothing quite like it.

Yes, I still have my original record collection from when I was a kid but my greatest treasures are because of my Dad (RIP), who kept bringing me picture disks from the late 1970s that are worth a lot today.

According to Billboard Magazine:

Vinyl album sales in the U.S. hit their 13th consecutive year of growth, with ‘Guardians’ being the top-selling LP and “Yellow Submarine” the biggest vinyl single.

Vinyl album sales continue to be a bright spot among an otherwise bleak album sales picture. 16.8 million vinyl albums were sold in 2018, according to Nielsen Music (up 14.6 percent) — marking the 13th consecutive year of growth for the format. 16.8 million is also a new yearly high for vinyl album sales since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991.

Comparatively, overall album sales (vinyl LP, CD, digital, cassette, etc.) in 2018 fell 17.7 percent to 141 million.

Vinyl LP sales accounted for 11.9 percent of all album sales in 2018 (16.8 million of 141 million). In 2017, the format comprised 6.5 percent of album sales.

Overall in 2018, 14 albums sold more than 50,000 copies on vinyl — up from just eight titles in 2017. Further, 79 titles exceeded 20,000 in LP sales in 2018, as compared to 77 in 2017 and 58 in 2016.

TOP 10 SELLING VINYL ALBUMS OF 2018 IN U.S.
Rank Artist, Title Sales
1 Soundtrack, Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 84,000
2 Michael Jackson, Thriller 84,000
3 Fleetwood Mac, Rumours 77,000
4 The Beatles, Abbey Road 76,000
5 Prince and The Revolution, Purple Rain(Soundtrack) 71,000
6 Pink Floyd, The Dark Side of the Moon 67,000
7 Bob Marley and The Wailers, Legend: The Best Of… 61,000
8 Queen, Greatest Hits 60,000
9 Amy Winehouse, Back to Black 59,000
10 Panic! at the Disco, Pray for the Wicked 59,000
Source: Nielsen Music, for the tracking period Dec. 29, 2017 through Jan. 3, 2019. (Titles listed with the same sales total are not tied, as their exact sales are rounded to the nearest thousand.)

RECORD WEEK FOR VINYL ALBUM SALES: 905,000 vinyl albums were sold in the week ending Dec. 27, 2018, the largest week for the format since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991. That sum actually beats out a record that was only set a week earlier, when 880,000 vinyl LPs were sold in the frame ending Dec. 20. (Before 2018, the largest week was registered in the week ending Dec. 21, 2017, with 811,000 vinyl albums sold.)

ROCK AROUND THE VINYL CLOCK: Rock music is tops among vinyl album buyers, as the genre comprises the largest share of vinyl LP sales: 63 percent. In 2017, the genre amounted to 67 percent of LP sales, while in 2016 rock yielded 69 percent of LP sales.

Libya Before and After Image Shows What a NATO/UN Humanitarian Mission Looks Like

All hail humanitarian war. Regime change can be a bitch.  Start with sanctions because of ‘humanitarian’ reasons.  If they don’t work, arm ragtag mercenaries and implement a ‘no-fly zone’ through an international body.  If the rebels can’t hunt down the defunct leader, then just bomb the hell out the country until a bloody carcass vaguely resembling the leader turns up.  Then claim that the humanitarian intervention was a wild success.  PS: Make sure you destroy enough of the infrastructure to secure a huge IMF bondage loan for reconstruction.

The before and after picture of Libya below shows what the U.S./NATO means by a humanitarian war:

Apple’s In Trouble and Here Is Why

Casual Commentary and Observations by Mitch Santell

613-9967-02

From what I have observed over the past 100 days at Apple makes me scratch my head. I’ve been a hardcore Apple user since 1984 spending thousands and thousands of dollars buying Apple products early in their life cycle.

My MacBook Air was purchased in 2014 and works great. I’ve had to recently replace the electric cord (Replacement Cost 55. dollars) and a brand new battery with installation (Cost 165.00 dollars).

magsafe macbook air
The Magsafe Cord Was Introduced in 2006 and Keeps Your Laptop Safe from Being Knocked Off Your Desk.

So as hot and sexy as the revised MacBook Air is for 2019, I think I’ll just stick with my current MacBook Air for another year because if it ain’t broke, don’t worry about it.

The reason that Apple is in trouble is that I predict that thousands of faithful Apple users are going to do what I just did. What was that? Simply fix or make adjustments to your current Mac and keeping your money in your pocket. The same is true of the iPhone. If you have an iPhone 7 or iPhone 8 that works, why trade up?

With regard to keeping products running on time, under Tim Cook, the MacBook Air (one of its most popular machines) was not updated in over 3 years, the Mac mini was not updated in over 4 years, and at over 5 years with still no update to the Mac Pro. The MacBook and iMac haven’t been updated in more than 1.5 years. The iPad mini hasn’t been updated in almost 2 years.

HomePods, beyond being 3 years late relative to Amazon, missed an important holiday season ceding more ground to other smart speakers. AirPods availability came late and is still constrained. AirPower was announced in 2017 and is still vapor.

Apple has basically abandoned and/or lobotomized much of its software in not providing meaningful feature upgrades in years; iTunes is a joke, iWork has had minimal updates (e.g., still cannot do basic word processing functions like table of authorities, line numbering, custom paragraph numbers, etc.), Aperture is dead, Back-to-Mac is dead, Airport Utility was lobotomized, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Is Your Trash Listening To You? I.O.T.

A Unique Video from a Truther in Southern California by Mitch Santell

The internet of things is a real thing and while it is fun to be connected, has it gone too far?

Technology is not a neutral tool. There are thousands of engineers working behind the scenes to make their company’s products persuasive and to keep users coming back.

Millennials check their phone about 150 times a day, according to Harris. People are always refreshing their social media accounts to see how many new likes their posts received. It’s a reward system similar to what happens when we pull a slot machine lever. “Even when we’re aware that we’re being manipulated, it doesn’t change the fact that the design is still appealing to us,” Harris said. “It’s based on how our psychology works.”

Never in human history has something been able to constantly project images directly to our eyes, he said, adding that if those images depict our friends having fun without us, it can damage our self-esteem. The AI algorithms behind such apps are designed to prioritize the best pictures posted—which over time can change the physiology of our brain and cause anxiety or depression.

The IOT is back in the news again this week. A judge has ordered Amazon to turn over audio data from an Alexa device related to a murder investigation.

There’s a few interesting things raised by this warrant. The investigators believe that Alexa may have captured audio of the attack itself and uploaded it to Amazon servers, which means that Alexa would have been listening despite the “wake word” not being spoken. This would go against how Amazon tells us the device functions. The investigators may be hoping that Alexa may have incidentally heard something that sounds like the wake word, and recorded audio based off of that. This has happened before.

They are also asking for a list of all devices that connected to the speaker during the time period in question. This means that Amazon is collecting information on everyone that visits your home and when based on their mobile devices that they bring along with them.

These new developments only add to the pile of issues that come with placing internet-connected microphones in your house. There’s the obvious problems like the security of the device, a hacked Alexa can listen to everything you say and do. And deeper problems like being unable to figure out what the speaker is collecting. The device can easily listen and record based on specific marketing or “national security” phrases and wait to upload the information until the next wake word is spoken. You can cram low quality audio in surprisingly small spaces, and because all communication with home servers is encrypted, you can’t know what information is actually being transmitted. A great example is Google Android sending GPS information to Google even while GPS was explicitly disabled.

Kevin Spacey Appears In Court Today

In The What Do You Think Will Happen Department by Mitch Santell

Kevin Spacey appeared in court today in regards to a Sexual Assault charge.

The outcome of Kevin Spacey’s trial I believe will play a significant role in how Hollywood deals with the power of celebrities.

From my perspective as a documentary filmmaker, producer of radio and music, I sincerely hope that things go Kevin’s way. Mr. Spacey knows how “Dog Eat Dog ” Hollywood is. There is so much about Kevin Spacey’s situation that reminds me of what happened to Charlie Chaplin during the making of the film, “The Gold Rush.”

Hollywood, Moving Beyond Betrayal

A Brief Commentary by Executive Producer Ricky Ray**

gwyneth-paltrow-et-winona-ryder-2
“Only Your Friends Can Betray You.” ~ Ricky Ray

“Only your friends can betray you.

Your enemies can’t.

They can only attack you.

Attacks can be prepared for.

Treachery is so dangerous in that it strikes at your absolute weakness while you’re completely unprepared.

Your friends are your weakness. Choose wisely.”

It keeps your enemies close in political statecraft, and beware friends and especially family who can and will betray You for countless reasons motivated by their envy, fear, insecurities… and gain.
History is fraught with tales of treason and empires taken not by enemies but from within family intrigues.
The Renaissance in Italy was a prime example like Rome and Greece.
The creator of multinational empires, Nebuchadnezzar II, kept his governor kings in his courts close, under watch as well as to use and manipulate to his ends if need be.
What a way to see who the sycophants are, and what they’ll do for a favor, eh?
And family… he kept wisely distant under watch having seen what they would do when Assyrians king Sennacherib was killed by his own sons after his 185,000 strong armies were supernaturally destroyed by one angelic being at night.
History is full of examples of family and friends Treachery from within.
The Caesar line prime example…
A bitter enemy can become a staunch ally.
Your success can strike family and friends with envy to betray you, for sick schadenfreude satisfying feelings at your demise, to feel better about their shitty selves.
I know this personally from my own blood family who are kept distant for that reason.

Democrat Congresswoman calls for 70% tax rate to fund complete overhaul of energy production and usage

This is a must-read post that will explain why Ocasio-Cortez has absolutely no understanding of real economics.

WINTERY KNIGHT

Cost of renewable wind and solar energy Cost of renewable wind and solar energy

A top Democrat Congresswoman has announced her plan to convert all American businesses and individuals away from low-cost energy production (natural gas, etc.) to high-cost “green” energy sources.  The new government spending will require a tax rate of 70%, which means you (or your employer) will be taking home 30% of what they work for. Let’s look at the consequences of this plan.

Here is the report from Daily Signal:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is ready to tax the rich to make her Green New Deal a reality.

“People are going to have to start paying their fair share in taxes,” the recently elected New York Democrat told TV show “60 Minutes” in an interview set to air Sunday.

Speaking of prior decades’ taxation rates in the country, Ocasio-Cortez added, “Once you get to the tippy tops, on your 10 millionth dollar, sometimes…

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez Wants America To Be Like Sweden

In The Are You Kidding Me Department by Mitch Santell

From those I met while living in New Zealand, one thing was clear, I was told to never go to Sweden.

Why?

The Swedish Culture is a huge mess right now.

Ocasio-Cortez wants America to be just like Sweden, and oh, she wants us out of our cars in 12 years. She must love Agenda 21 now in full swing here in California.

What makes Sweden so exceptionally dangerous for women? Its militant feminism is embedded in its political culture and its educational system. Sweden has boasted of a “feminist foreign policy”, 61% of Swedes in one survey identified as feminists and hold the strongest views on “gender equality” of any Europeans. Swedes are the most likely to believe that it’s okay for men to cry. Only 11% believe that women should take care of the home and only 10% believe that it’s a man’s job to support his family

A local branch of the Left Party in Sweden even demanded that men urinate while sitting down.

And then there are the Czechs, just 13% identify as feminists, 77% think that a woman’s place is in the home, yet the sexual assault rate is 7.79 per 100,000, a tiny fraction of feminist Sweden.

If the real issues were feminism and toxic masculinity, if sufficient educational indoctrination about the evils of masculinity is needed to “teach men not to rape”, women should be safest in Sweden.

So what went wrong?

Rape statistics also show that Sweden is one of the most unsafe countries in the Western world for women. Although these stats can be debated, an increase in gang rapes does coincide with the creation of the liberal, multicultural feminist state.

Female genital mutilation is a fairly new occurrence in Sweden. School nurses reported last year that all 30 girls in a class in Norrköping had been genitally mutilated. Although this has not led to a debate on women’s rights, Sara Johnsdotter, a social anthropologist from the university of Malmö, argues that the word itself is stigmatizes women and should be exchanged to the more including “circumcision”.

sweden 2019
Gang-related gun murders increased by 40% in 2018

Shootings in the country have become so common that they don’t make top headlines anymore, unless they are spectacular or lead to fatalities. News of attacks are quickly replaced with headlines about sports events and celebrities, as readers have become desensitized to the violence. A generation ago, bombings against the police and riots were extremely rare events. Today, reading about such incidents is considered part of daily life.

Maybe Ocasio-Cortez needs to fly to Sweden to have a greater understanding of what real rape and racism look like. (Please accept my apology for Ocasio-Cortez calling Trump a racist).
